Limits Help

I read the description on the product page and I am still confused! I still don’t know for what I should use Limits?

Limits is a very flexible app. With a lot of flexibility comes also a little bit more complexity. This means that you can track everything countable, but first you have to understand the concept of countable data.

The Limits product page gives already some examples like expenses, your weight, call time, or hours spent on Twitter. This is just to give you an idea how flexible the data can be. You can also count the number of your daily tweets or invent your own score where -10 represents every day you didn’t visit Twitter and 1 represents every single visit.

With Limits you just enter data that is essentially a number with a corresponding unit (like $, lbs, # or even nothing). Then you start to enter data points and track your overall progress. It is a very simple concept, but yet very powerful once you understand it. Please use the contact form at the bottom of this page if you have further questions or don’t know how to count your data. We would also love to know about your specific use case for Limits.

What do all the colors in the smart status bars mean?

Limits is a versatile app that can track either positive or negative entries. You can also count something up or down. That’s the reason why you can see up to five colors in all of the smart status bars:

  • Dark blue
  • Light blue
  • Gray
  • Green
  • Red

Gray is just the default status bar color for new data entries and represents zero. The best way to understand the other four colors is to go through some examples:

Imagine you have set up a new entry for your weekly food expenses with an upper limit of $160. On Monday you spend $40 for food and ¼ of the bar gets green, the rest stays gray. On Tuesday you go out with your friend and buy an expensive bottle of champagne. You spend $120 and the whole bar gets green. At this point you almost reached your weekly budget, but you still didn’t exceed it. When you spend more money the bar starts to “grow” from the right side and more and more of the bar gets red. The more red you see, the more you’ve exceeded your weekly budget.

The same thing happens in the other direction. Let’s say that you want to track how many times each day you play Angry Birds. Every time you play the game you get one penalty point. For every day without playing you get ten points in return. Now imagine that you play Angry Birds three times on the first day. This means that you get three penalty points. On the second day you don’t play it at all, so that you get ten points in return. Now your entry has reached a negative value and a part of the status bar gets a light blue color. The more you skip playing Angry Birds, the more blue you will see. At a certain point the bar will fill with a darker blue color to show that you are extremely well doing.
